Aerial Vehicle Target Acquisition System
Naval Surface Warfare Center - Crane Division
Aerial vehicles without a human pilot aboard are often preferred for threat targeting and other military missions that are too dangerous for manned aircraft. These military applications can also serve civil needs such as crowd dispersal and reconnaissance. The Navy has developed a hand-launchable, unmanned aerial system (UAS) that can be guided to seek a pre-identified target. The UAS is stored in a portable case that holds a launcher capable of catapulting the UAS up into the air. The launch can simultaneously arm a sensor to modify flight control surfaces and guide the UAS on a downward spiral search-mode of operation.
