Modular Mission Payload Control Software
Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division
Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in operation today are designed around a single mission payload. The payload is located in the UAS and is controlled remotely using a human-computer interface connected at a tactical control station. Given the current configuration and architecture, implementing a new payload in the UAS is exceedingly difficult and requires changing the software in a multitude of systems, terminals, processors, and stations. There is a great need for a common interface for all payloads that may be carried by the UAS and an open system architecture to facilitate the integration of new and differing payloads. The Navy has met these needs with the modular mission payload control software capable of controlling each payload according to that payload's unique interface.

Researchers at Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been studying the effects of drones on a variety of agricultural implementation, such as microbe analysis, and indeed, how drones affect the behavior of actual livestock such as sheep. According to Farmer's Weekly, the evidence gathered seems to support the notion that sheep are largely undeterred from their regular patterns of behavior by nearby drones.

Bay Area company expands to Reno, helps autonomous drones avoid collisions

New Jersey outlaws drunken droning

New Jersey residents who fly recreational drones while drunk or high soon will run the risk of getting locked up for six months and being charged a $1,000 fine if caught by law enforcement. Before leaving office last month, Republican Gov. Chris Christie signed into law what has become known as the "Drunk Droning Law," which unanimously passed both houses of the state legislature. The sponsor, Democratic Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, says the bill does much more than just rein in droning while drinking.
